Hera set to publish thrilling historical debut set in the world of gay Georgian London

September 25, 2024

Commissioning editor Jennie Ayres has secured World rights, including audio and translation, for two novels by debut author K.K O’Brien, directly from the author in a two-book deal. The first book in the deal, The Silent Dressmaker, will be published in simultaneous paperback and ebook in autumn 2025, with a second book inspired by the life of Jane Morris in spring 2026.

The Silent Dressmaker tells the story of Matthew Rooke, a skilled corset-maker with a secret: he is a gay man living a secret life in Georgian England and will face the noose if he is outed. But when he falls in love with aristocrat Henry Ashby, he is hired as private dressmaker to Henry’s wife, Elina, so they can continue their secret affair. The three live together in uneasy tension until a devastating climax forces Matthew to make a deadly decision that could threaten everything he holds dear.

Commissioning editor Jennie Ayres says: ‘I read The Silent Dressmaker late into the night, unable to put it down, utterly captivated by Matthew’s story and his dangerous, exciting world. Delicious Gothic notes, fascinating characters and a backbone of peril make this a compelling and unforgettable read that shines a rare light on underrepresented voices in historical fiction. I can’t wait to bring it to readers.’

K.K. O’Brien commented: ‘I’m so thrilled to join Hera’s list and look forward to collaborating with their brilliant team on both of these novels. Jennie’s unwavering enthusiasm has been so encouraging, and I’m eager to embark on this creative journey as we bring these titles to life. I can’t wait to share these characters and their stories with readers who love atmospheric historical fiction and unique voices from the past.’
